Assessment
Pay close attention to all submission dates as there are penalties for submitting late.
The final grade for this course will be determined using the following assessment components.
| Assessment | % |
| Unsupervised | |
| Reserch Paper | 25 |
| Supervised | |
| Class participation | 15 |
| Workshop | 10 |
| Exam | 50 |
To obtain a passing grade in this course, students must obtain a final mark of at least 50% and achieve at least 45% in the exam.
If you fail the course due to poor exam performance, you may not re-use your marks. If you decide to repeat the course, you will have to repeat all assessment.
Note that the final mark (calculated using all components of the assessment) may be scale (up or down) before a final grade is awarded in this course. This ensures that standards consistent with the School of Computer and Information Science are maintained.
Deferred Assessment and Special Consideration
In the case of deferred assessment or special consideration the student must apply at Campus Central (and not to the course coordinator or the program director).
- A deferred assessment applies to the final assessment item for the course. It is granted on the basis of medical, compassionate or religious observance grounds. Note that in most CIS courses the final assessment item is the examination.
- In the case of a deferred examination students must apply to Campus Central before the examination or within 5 working days of the examination.
- Generally students will not be granted a deferred examination if they sit the original examination but see “special consideration” below.
- A deferred examination will not be granted if the course coordinator determines that a student has not fulfilled all other requirements of the course and therefore cannot pass the course.
- There will only be one offering of the deferred examination and no consideration will be given to any student who is awarded a deferred examination but does not or cannot attend.
- In the case of a deferred assessment (where the final assessment item is not an examination) students must apply to Campus Central before or within 5 days of the submission (due) date of the final assessment item.
- A student may apply for special consideration on the basis of medical, compassionate or religious observance grounds if the student believes that illness, disability through accident or other special circumstances significantly affected his or her performance in the final assessment item. Students must apply to Campus Central before or within 5 days of the examination or the submission date of the final assessment item. Note that special consideration will only be given to CIS students in very exceptional circumstances.
Supplementary Assessment, Conceded Pass & Terminating Pass
Students cannot apply for a supplementary assessment, conceded pass or terminating pass. These are determined by Program Directors during the academic review process at the end of each semester and they are approved and awarded by the School Board. The Program Directors consider a student's overall results for the preceding six months and any course or program specific rules for conceded passes. FIT does not have any course-specific rules for awarding supplementary assessment, conceded and terminating passes. All students who are awarded a supplementary assessment, conceded pass or terminating pass will be notified immediately after the academic review.
- To be eligible for a supplementary assessment, your grade for this course must be F1 and the GPA (for the semester in which this course is taken) must be at least 3.4 However supplementary assessment will not be awarded to a student who has failed the examination component of this course or has not met all requirements for this course.
- To be eligible for a conceded pass (CP), the mark for the course must be in the range 45-49% and the GPA (for the semester in which this course is taken) must be at least 3.75. For prerequisite purposes, a conceded pass is treated as a pass grade.
- To be eligible for a terminating pass (TP), the mark for this course must be in the range of 45-49% and the GPA (for the semester in which this course is taken) must be at least 3.4. For prerequisite purposes, a terminating pass is treated as a fail grade. Note that a terminating pass will not be offered in core prerequisite courses.
Special Rule for the Final Course in a Program
Students who attempt and fail a course that is the last course in their program may be awarded a deferred assessment if, in the opinion of the course coordinator, they can still pass this course by taking the deferred assessment. Students who wish to be considered for this special rule must contact their Program Director within 5 days of exam results being posted. This rule will not apply if the results of any other courses are in doubt (due to incomplete grades or deferred assessment or any other reason).
